Applique

Embroidery process that involves using cut pieces of fabric in place of large fill stitch areas. The fabric pieces are sewn into the design. The process is used to reduce stitch counts in large designs and/or to create a unique appearance.

Buttonhole stitch

This stitch is used for cutwork embroidery and trims with scallops the edge of an embroidery.

Cutwork

It is called cutwork, because the pattern that is designed on the cloth is cut and openings are formed with the use of a lot of different stitches ( buttonhole stitch, flat stitch, drawnwork, simple stem stitch & single hemstitch). It must be done with great care and skill.

Double darning stitch

It is the stitch of the shadow and is usually made on delicate cloth. The pattern is drawn and embroidered on the back side of the cloth. The shadow of double darning stitch shows on the front side of the embroidery.

Drawnwork

From the middle of the 16th century the geometric type of drawnwork - where the field of decoration is obtained by withdrawing threads from a linen fabric- was already well established.

The process of the work is as follows: groups of warp and weft threads are drawn or cut from a piece of linen fabric leaving at intervals a certain number of warp threads, those with cut edges of the linen cloth forming a series of rectangular openings; in such spaces added threads stitched diagonally, served to support star and circular motifs worked in the simple loop or buttonhole stitch (point noue), which is the foundation of all needlepoint lace. This lace has been variously described as “reticella” or “gothic point” or “Greek lace”.

Flat stitch

The flat stitch is used to fill wide spaces and needs a lot of skill.
The stitches are done very close to each other filling the pattern which is drawn on the fabric. It is ideal for embossed flowers and leaves.

French knot

A beautiful, embossed, decorative stitch that offers grace and elegance to the embroidery.
It is used to form flowers or for the center of flower designs.

Simple stem stitch

It is the basis of decorative stitches and is the simplest embroidery stitch.
The stitches are done very close to each other filling the pattern which is drawn on the fabric.
